Major English Language Studies

SYNOPSIS OF PROGRAMME

The B.A. English Language Studies (ELS) programme aims to produce graduates who are competent and knowledgeable in language and linguistics.  This programme also trains students to analyse literary texts effectively and hone their communication skills in order to reach excellence at the international level.  Students are given opportunities to analyse concepts and theories in the field of English Language Studies.  It will also increase the students’ commitment in applying the principles that they have learned particularly in communicating and managing information at the workplace.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

To produce graduates who are:

  • knowledgeable and competent in the field of linguistics and language studies.
  • able to read and respond to literary texts in a critical manner.
  • proficient users of the English language, both spoken and written.
  • equipped with sustainable generic and critical thinking skills for life-long learning.


LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of the programme, graduates will:

  1. use their English language skills for effective spoken and written communication.
  2. practice life-long learning  through their ability to read, interpret and understand English language texts from a variety of genres and periods.
  3. use their knowledge of the English sound system to improve communication and apply their writing skills in writing reports, memos, business letters and literary reviews in the English language.
  4. exhibit scientific and thinking skills in processing information and ideas to solve problems in English.
  5. use software/linguistic tools to analyse linguistic data.
  6. exhibit a responsible attitude and possess social as well as  language skills to interact with courtesy in the community.
  7. exhibit leadership qualities  in group work activities, information management and problem solutions.
  8. practice professionalism, positive values and good ethics at the workplace.


PRE-REQUISITE

To major or minor in English Language Studies, students must enrol  and pass HEA 101/4 -  Introduction to English Language Studies with at least grade C.
